"A further point. It is agreed that pain is bad, and to be avoided; some of it is just plain bad, and some of it is bad by getting in the way of some good. Now, the contrary of what is to be avoided, in so far as it is to be avoided and is bad, is good. Necessarily, then, pleasure is a good. Speusippus solution, that it is like the way a larger thing is contrary both to what is smaller and what is the same size, does not work; for he would hardly say that pleasure was some kind of evil.
